*Pain free* dentistry on Southampton High Street

We can provide specialist private options for all ages.

Unfortunately not all children/teenagers meet the criteria to have their teeth straightened with NHS funding. We can help!

Starting as early as age 7, when adult teeth begin to appear, children’s braces can play a crucial role in guiding proper dental development.

Early treatment can prevent more severe orthodontic issues from developing, improving both the appearance and self-esteem of your child at a young age by creating and preserving space for erupting teeth. Early straightening can also make it easier to maintain oral hygiene, reducing the risk of dental decay and gum disease. Additionally, early intervention with braces can lessen the likelihood of needing extractions or jaw surgery in later life, setting the foundation for a healthier, more confident smile.

Sofia noticed that her new adult teeth didn’t quite fit together properly when she bit down.

Recognising the importance of early intervention, her family opted for Invisalign First treatment over the course of 6 months. By creating space, her teeth could be repositioned into optimal alignment.

Children and tweens treatment

Getting braces isn’t always a one-size-fits-all solution. In the UK, most people start traditional orthodontic treatment after all their baby teeth have fallen out, usually between ages 12 to 17. While this often achieves a perfect smile in one go, some dental issues can cause big headaches before this and get even trickier with time.

That’s where early interceptive treatment steps in for kids aged 7 to 12. The goal is to stop serious dental problems before they become mega-sized dramas later on. By guiding how teeth and jaws grow, it tackles issues early, saving healthy teeth from unexpected bumps and preventing problems like crooked bites or teeth going their own way—overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Early treatment not only makes smiles sparkle but also sets children up for a lifetime of dental health success.

Benefits of being proactive…

It’s more than just appearances. At this crucial stage, there are also psychological and developmental implications to consider.

  • Boost your child’s confidence: early treatment boosts self-esteem, paving the way for a lifetime of pride in their smile.
  • Reduce risk of irreversible trauma: early treatment reduces the risk of damaging vulnerable protruding front teeth. This proactive approach minimises the potential for lifelong consequences from a simple fall or accident.
  • Create space for your child’s new smile: early intervention ensures ample room for adult teeth to come in comfortably.
  • Avoid more drastic measures: early corrections prevent future need for extractions or surgery at a later stage.
  • Speak clearly and confidently: proper alignment can improve speech clarity, enhancing communication skills.
  • Enhance oral hygiene: aligned teeth are easier to clean, reducing risks of cavities and gum disease.
  • Break free from habits: early braces can help break habits like thumb sucking, fostering healthier habits and a brighter smile.

Hannah noticed her bite was getting deeper—her lower teeth were hiding whenever she smiled.

If left alone, she might start to notice those sharp lower teeth causing trouble for her palate.

Luckily, Hannah jumped in at just the right time to make a change that will keep her smiling bright for years to come.

Deep overbite

When Hannah bit together her upper teeth completely overlapped her lower teeth. The can’t be seen, leave limited space for the adult teeth and cause her to bite her palate.

Invisalign First may not be the best option for all children.

Invisalign First only works when it’s being worn. Willingness (compliance) to do so is key. Children who don’t wear their aligners will see slower or little progress!

Invisalign Stickables

Getting kids excited about a trip to the orthodontist can be challenging. One of the great things about Invisalign First is you can customise your aligners with stickers.

Rapid palatal expansion

Rapid Palatal Expansion increases growth. It is a device that helps to expand the upper jaw and create the best space for the adult teeth to erupt. This can in turn improve airways, facilitating greater capacity for better breathing.

There are multiple options to achieve this including removable brace options. We prefer to offer fixed solutions which means your child won’t have to take it (in and) out anytime, remember to wear it, or dare we say, lose it! We find fixed braces finish sooner than removable braces.

A hyrax device is composed of two halves interconnected with a screw in the middle of the mouth and attached to the upper molar teeth with bonding or bands. It is custom made to fit your mouth precisely. This ensures it is a comfortable fit.

We will show you how and when to turn the screw to achieve the expansion needed. Throughout the duration of your treatment plan, we will schedule periodic appointments to ensure your hyrax expander is adjusted as needed to keep your treatment plan on track. Most people wear a Hyrax device for around 4-6 months.

Before treatment, Aiden had a tough time with his teeth. His front teeth developed a crossbite, where the top teeth were biting down onto his gums causing trauma.

To address this, Aiden underwent 7 months of Invisalign First treatment. This treatment helped move his teeth into better positions while he was still growing. With the result he achieved Aiden is unlikely to need any further braces treatment.

Crossbite

All of the teeth on the right hand side were in crossbite. This means the lower teeth bite outside of the upper teeth instead of the upper teeth overlapping them.

Teens

Teenagers often rush to embrace adulthood, but when it comes to braces, they’re already ahead of the game. We offer teenagers the same diverse range of treatment options (Invisalign, Metal Fixed Braces, and Clear Fixed Braces) that we provide to our adult patients.

What sets teenagers apart is their ongoing growth, which can make orthodontic treatment more effective and efficient. This developmental phase allows us to address complex issues before they become permanent, without the complications of tooth wear or missing teeth that adults may face.

We understand that teenagers are navigating a pivotal time in their lives, balancing school, extracurriculars, and social activities. Our goal is to make their orthodontic experience as smooth and comfortable as possible, ensuring they achieve a confident smile without disrupting their busy lives. We’re committed to supporting teenagers in achieving optimal dental health and a smile they’ll be proud to show off for years to come.

Before treatment, Hatty was feeling a bit uneasy about her smile. She had a noticeable overjet and some crowding in her upper front teeth, with one tooth being particularly small and peg-shaped. Seeing her sister’s positive results from orthodontic treatment motivated her to seek similar help.

After her 2-year Invisalign treatment, Hatty’s teeth are now beautifully aligned. Plus, she has the option to enhance her smaller front teeth with composite bonding whenever she feels ready. The treatment not only fixed her alignment issues but also gave her the flexibility to make additional minor cosmetic improvements, ensuring she always feels great about her smile in the long run.

Your questions answered

Is there a waiting list?

No there isn’t. Unlike NHS treatment one benefit of private treatment is that we can usually start your treatment within a few weeks of your initial consultation

Will my child need further braces, later in life?

In some cases, additional orthodontic treatment may be necessary as your child grows. However, early interceptive treatment can significantly reduce the complexity and duration of any future treatment needed.

Is early interceptive treatment available on the NHS?

Technically, yes. However, the timing of treatment is crucial, if your dentist spots the problem and refers you to an NHS setting waiting lists can be lengthy. NHS options are typically limited to bulkier removable appliances, and access to treatment can be limited due to high demand.

How do I know if it’s the right time for my child to start treatment?

If you’re unsure whether it’s too early for your child to begin braces, don’t worry! We’re always happy to assess your child’s dental development and advise you on the best timing for treatment. Our goal is to ensure your child receives orthodontic care at the optimal stage for effective results.

Will my child need to miss school for appointments?

We strive to schedule appointments that minimise disruption to your child’s school schedule. Most appointments can be arranged during after-school hours or at convenient times to avoid missing important classes.

Will wearing braces restrict my child from participating in activities or hobbies?

Braces should not significantly limit your child’s ability to enjoy their hobbies or participate in activities. We offer treatment options that are tailored to fit around your child’s lifestyle.

For instance, Invisalign First is discreet and can be removed for playing musical instruments and certain sports, providing flexibility without hindering their enjoyment. Hrax treatment, on the other hand, is fixed in place and often becomes a part of daily life without causing disruption to activities.
