Dental bridges are a fixed option to replace missing teeth.

Similar to crowns, dental bridges offer a highly aesthetic finish and are meticulously crafted to resemble natural teeth. When suitable, bridges can be used to fill the gap left by a missing or extracted tooth. This is achieved by using healthy, well-maintained teeth on either side of the gap to support and secure the bridge in place. At Hampshire Dentists in Southampton we can use dental bridges to effectively fill single or multiple gaps.

Dental bridges…

  • Are a fixed and durable solution to replace missing teeth

  • Restore your ability to chew and speak properly

Have you been thinking about how to make your smile look and feel better?

Rebecca was keen to avoid a removable denture to replace her missing front tooth. After careful consideration she decided a bridge was right for her at the moment.

Types of dental bridges

Adhesive bridge

A great option for front teeth. The false tooth is fixed in place with a metal or ceramic wing to your adjacent tooth. This type of bridge usually requires less adjustment however the bridge is less strong than a conventional bridge.

Conventional bridge

For back teeth, its a fantastic option. The adjacent teeth are adjusted to create room for a crown/cap to fit over them. Once in place the crowns and false tooth are secured with a dental cement/ adhesive.

Are there any alternatives?

Alternatives to dental bridges include dental implants and dentures

Dental implants are fixed solutions that involve placing titanium posts into the jawbone to support artificial teeth, offering a natural look and feel with the benefit of preserving jawbone health.

Dentures are a removable replacement option to restore any number of missing teeth. They are cost effective and can restore look and function.

What does dental bridge treatment involve?

Firstly, you’ll be given a local anaesthetic to make the procedure painless.

1. Your neighbouring tooth or teeth are adjusted to provide support for a false tooth.

2.  A scan/impression of the prepared tooth/teeth is taken and send to the lab.

While you wait for the bridge to be made, a temporary option with be fitted.

3. Once you are happy with the fit and appearance of the new false tooth, along with its supporting structure, it can then be securely fixed in place to your neighbouring teeth using dental cement or adhesive.

    Your questions answered

    Why choose a dental bridge?

Choosing a dental bridge is a great way to fill gaps from missing teeth when you have strong adjacent teeth. Unlike dentures, a dental bridge is fixed, so you don’t have to worry about removing it. It helps you chew and speak comfortably while stopping your teeth from drifting out of place.

    Some important considerations

Since dental bridges rely on your adjacent teeth for support, your remaining teeth need to be in good health and strong. Larger gaps exert more pressure on adjacent teeth. For larger gaps, you might want to explore a fixed alternative like a Dental Implant, or consider a Denture for a more budget friendly solution.

Roughly how much do dental bridges cost?

The cost for dental bridges varies greatly depending on the type of bridge, material, quality of adjacent teeth as well as the size of the gap.

As a rough guide bridges start from £1100.
