Dental hygienists provide you with professional cleaning to remove any plaque and calculus you’ve missed with brushing. They champion and support you to develop a daily oral hygiene routine that is effective in keeping your teeth and gums healthy long term. They have a critical contribution to the overall health of your mouth.

Do your gums bleed when you brush or floss?

Do you feel self conscious about having persistent bad breath?

Do your teeth feel rough or coated, even after brushing?

Do your teeth appear stained or discoloured?

Why should you choose Hampshire Dentists in Southampton?

Direct access to our hygiene team

Did you know you can see our hygiene team directly without needing to visit a dentist first. This makes it easier and more convenient to maintain your oral health.

All dental hygienists are licensed with the General Dental Council [GDC], and have years of their own professional training under their belt, so you are in competent and caring hands.

Comprehensive gum disease treatment

We provide more than just a standard scale and polish. If you have active gum disease, we create a personalised treatment plan to help to manage it. This includes deep cleaning below the gum line to target specific problem areas and regular follow-ups to monitor progress.

Advanced monitoring of gum health

We closely measure and monitor gum pocket depth, plaque levels, and gum bleeding to track the progression or improvement of your condition over time.

Your comfort is our priority

At Hampshire Dentists, your comfort is our priority. We use local anaesthetic when necessary to ensure painless treatments and a relaxed experience. Our hygiene team also utilises Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), a cutting-edge Swiss innovation that gently removes harmful bacteria responsible for tooth decay and gum disease. GBT uses airflow technology for a highly effective, minimally invasive clean that’s gentle enough for use on natural teeth, restorations, braces, implants, gums, and even the tongue—ensuring both comfort and excellent oral care.

Hygienist - Hampshire Dentists Pain Free Dentist in Southampton

I have recently visited Hampshire dentists and couldn’t be happier with the service in which I received. From the moment I walked into the reception I was made to feel totally welcome by the super friendly staff. I was booked in for a hygienist appointment as I had some stains i wanted to be removed. The whole service was so professional and I was taken through every step of the process so I was clear what was going on. I left with my teeth looking and feeling so much more clean!!

Guided biofilm therapy with Airflow

We use a sophisticated hygiene system called GBT Airflow, where teeth are disclosed with a dye to helpfully show you areas that you are missing. The biofilm in these areas is then subsequently cleaned very thoroughly with a combination of up to three cleaning systems, and finally the teeth are protected with a fluoride seal.

GBT therapy is highly effective but also very gentle so great for patients who have previous found hygiene visits uncomfortable.

Your questions answered

Why do we recommend you visit the hygienist?

Hygienists are an essential part of the dental team, they help manage and prevent dental diseases including gum disease.

Regular professional cleaning prevents the build-up of plaque and calculus, helps remove stains and best of all, makes your breath fresher.

How often should I visit the hygienist?

Everyone can benefit from seeing a hygienist, though some people may need more frequent cleanings than others. The frequency of your visits depends on the health of your teeth and gums, any medical conditions, and lifestyle factors such as smoking.

Some patients may benefit from appointments every three months, while others may only need to visit once a year.

Why do my gums bleed?

Bleeding gums are often a sign of gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease caused by plaque buildup along the gumline. Other causes include aggressive brushing, hormonal changes and certain medications. It’s important to investigate the cause and manage the problem to avoid it progressing.

What is dental plaque and calculus?

Dental plaque is a soft, sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth and gums. It develops when the bacteria in your mouth mix with food particles and saliva.

If not removed through regular brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into calculus (also known as tartar), leading to cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues. Calculus cannot be removed with a tooth brush, it has to be removed by professional cleaning.

How much do hygiene appointments cost?

A new patient full hygienist appointment is £139, this is for an extended 60min appointment where our hygienists will complete a thorough assessment of your gum condition and discuss any findings with you. They will complete your professional cleaning as well as provide tips and tricks for your daily oral hygiene routine.

After your initial visit our hygienist will make recommendations on the frequency and length of future hygiene appointments you need to return your gums to health and/or maintain gum health.

Most patients will require a 6 monthly hygiene session charged at £104.25.

Post operative bleeding

It is normally to experience some bleeding after gum treatment to remove large deposits of calculus as the gums need time to recover. This will improve with good oral hygiene and regular hygiene visits.

Here are examples of patients before and after their initial stage of gum treatment. By removing the hardened calculus, they experienced a significant improvement right away. It’s common to notice some bleeding after the initial treatment, as the gums may have been affected by the prolonged presence of plaque and calculus. With consistent oral hygiene practices and regular dental visits, this bleeding will gradually subside.
