Composite bonding is a cosmetic procedure where a tooth-colored resin is applied to your teeth to improve their appearance. The resin is shaped and polished to match your natural teeth, blending seamlessly with your smile. This minimally invasive treatment offers an instant smile makeover, fixing chips, cracks, and gaps with little to no drilling.

Composite bonding provides predictable, budget-friendly results compared to veneers or crowns. It’s a versatile solution that not only enhances your smile but also strengthens damaged teeth, giving you a beautiful and durable result.

George has always looked after himself and his teeth however the small spaces between his front teeth always bothered him. Keen to avoid braces he opted to have these teeth reshaped with composite bonding for a minimal, quick but very effective result.

What can composite bonding achieve?

Composite bonding can address a variety of dental concerns, including:

  • Fixing chips and cracks: if you have minor chips or cracks in your teeth, composite bonding can restore their shape and appearance.
  • Closing gaps: small gaps between teeth can be filled in, creating a more uniform smile.
  • Improving discolouration: composite bonding can cover stains or discolourations that don’t respond well to whitening treatments.
  • Reshaping teeth: if you have irregularly shaped teeth, composite bonding can help create a more balanced look.

What are the limitations?

While composite bonding is a fantastic option for many, it’s important to be aware of its limitations:

  • Durability: composite resin isn’t as strong as natural tooth enamel or other dental materials like porcelain. It’s more prone to chipping and staining, so it might need to be touched up or replaced over time.
  • Longevity: on average, composite bonding lasts between 3 to 7 years, depending on how well you take care of it and your everyday habits.
  • Maintenance: to keep your bonded teeth looking great, you’ll need to put in a little extra effort: regular cleaning, regular check ups, and maybe the occasional touch-up. Good oral hygiene and avoiding habits like biting your nails or chewing on hard objects will help keep your smile in top shape.
  • Tooth structure: just like a painting needs a good canvas, composite bonding requires a strong, healthy tooth structure to bond to. If your teeth are too weak or damaged, this might not be the best option for you.

For a more durable solution or if you have specific concerns about any of the above, porcelain veneers could be worth considering as an alternative.

Is composite bonding
the right choice for you?

We’re here to help you make the best choice for your smile. If you want a quick, cost-effective improvement, composite bonding might be perfect. For a more durable solution, consider veneers or crowns.

Frances had always felt that her tooth proportions were off, particularly noting her teeth appeared ‘pointy’.  She wanted a more uniform, square, and broad smile, and composite bonding provided the perfect solution.

These ‘lateral incisor’ teeth always bothered Frances, As they are smaller and slightly rotated they appeared pointy and uneven to Frances.

Your questions answered

How long does composite bonding last?

Composite bonding can last anywhere between 3 to 7 years, depending on factors like your oral hygiene, eating habits, and whether you grind your teeth. Regular dental check-ups and good oral care can help prolong the life of your bonding.

Is composite bonding painful?

No, composite bonding is a minimally invasive and typically pain-free procedure. Since it usually requires little to no tooth adjustment, most patients don’t need anaesthesia and experience minimal discomfort during the process.

How does composite bonding compare to veneers or crowns?

Composite bonding is a more budget-friendly and less invasive alternative to veneers or crowns. While it doesn’t last as long as those options, it still provides an effective way to correct a variety of dental imperfections and can be done in a single visit.

How do I care for composite bonding after treatment?

Composite bonding doesn’t necessarily require special care beyond good oral hygiene. However, it’s advisable to avoid biting on hard objects and to minimise consumption of staining foods and drinks to maintain the bonding’s appearance. If your teeth were previously chipped due to wear we might also recommend a mouthguard to wear at night. Regular dental check-ups will help ensure your bonding stays in great shape.

Roughly how much does composite bonding cost?

The cost of composite bonding at Hampshire Dentists varies considerably depending on the extent of the treatment:

  • Minor tooth reshaping: Starts form £150 per tooth
  • Minimal composite bonding: Starts from £250 per tooth
  • Full coverage veneers: Start from £500 per tooth

We offer a range of options to suit your specific needs and budget. Additionally, we take into account the complexity of your treatment and the number of teeth involved, working to reduce overall costs where possible without compromising on quality.
