Are there any options we don’t typically recommend?
Through this experience we have found some treatment options are more successful than others. We take the time to understand your goals and lifestyle and explore all of the available options. We’re here to guide you every step of the way.
We have moved away from recommending lingual braces as our first choice. Lingual braces can be uncomfortable for many patients, and have limitations in the movements they can make.
If you are looking for a subtle, comfortable option you may find Invisalign aligners are a more effective option.
Our team has experience with Inman aligners however we have found this treatment is more limited in effectively addressing complex orthodontic issues.
We can discuss with you if an Inman aligner is going to be effective in your specific case.
When it comes to removable aligner systems, we are committed to staying at the forefront of advancements in orthodontics. Currently, our top recommendation is Invisalign, and for good reason.
Invisalign leads the global industry with its cutting-edge technology and consistent track record of delivering exceptional results. Patients love Invisalign not only for its effectiveness but also for its comfort and aesthetic appeal, making it the preferred choice for those seeking discreet removable straightening treatment.
Uneven edges
The bottom of these teeth appear uneven due to rotation of the teeth themselves.
Crowding
In this area, the lack of space caused the canine tooth to shift towards the cheek and the second front tooth to move back towards the roof of the mouth.
Severe crowding
This tooth has been pushed back towards the tongue, making it barely visible and appearing darker due to the shadows casted by the teeth in front.

Your straightening questions answered
Anyone who desires a straighter smile can consider straightening treatment. This includes children, teenagers, and adults.
Typically, Orthodontists recommend the earliest treatment options can start around the age of 7, but there’s no upper age limit. If you have healthy teeth and gums, you are likely a good candidate.
The duration of straightening treatment can vary based on your starting position and desired result as well as the type of treatment chosen.
Teeth straightening can be completed in as little as 3 months up to 3 years, however many of our treatments are completed in less than 9 months. Our Orthodontist can provide you an estimate based on your individual needs.
You’ll typically need to attend appointments for braces every 4-8 weeks. These visits allow us to monitor your progress closely and make any necessary adjustments to ensure your treatment stays on track.
With fixed braces, appointments average about once a month, providing regular adjustments for optimal results.
Invisalign offers more flexibility with appointment scheduling, depending on your treatment plan and progress.
The costs for our treatment vary greatly depending on the type of braces, your starting position and your desired result. All of our treatment plans are different and tailored to your individual needs. The best way for us to give you accurate costs is to come in and meet our Orthodontist. As a rough guide our options for braces start from £2,850, average cost for treatment is £4,450.
When you start straightening treatment with Hampshire Dentists, you’re getting a comprehensive package to ensure your teeth become and stay straight. This includes:
- All appointments, materials and adjustments: regular reviews as well as any extra visits needed. We are here for you at every stage of your treatment.
- After braces: We offer you not one but two types of retainers to hold your teeth in their new position for life. We can provide a clear, removable retainer for you to wear at night. We can also place a fixed retainer on the back of your teeth – that way if you forget to wear the removable retainer one night the other one is always there working its magic.
- 12 Months of Ongoing Supervision and Support: After your active treatment phase, you’ll receive a year of follow-up appointments to ensure your teeth stay in their new positions.
- Teeth Whitening can be a very effective way to enhance your smile. It can boost confidence, improve self-esteem and even make you look younger. To everyone who is suitable we offer whitening treatment to give a final boost to your newly straightened smile.
Yes, you will need to wear a retainer after treatment to maintain the results, regardless of whether you had Invisalign or braces.
We include a fixed retainer and a removable retainer in all of our treatment plans.

We can help
We can correct all common orthodontic problems:
An overbite is like wearing a hat that’s pulled down too far over your face. Normally, the hat should sit at a comfortable level, just above your eyes. But in an overbite, it’s as if the hat is pulled down too low, covering more of your face than it should. Similarly, the top front teeth overlap the bottom front teeth more than normal, which can lead to issues with chewing, speaking, and teeth alignment.
An openbite is when your upper and lower teeth refuse to meet, leaving a gap even when your mouth is closed. Picture trying to bite into an apple and your front teeth just don’t connect. This can make eating certain foods a challenge and might affect your speech.
Picture a group of friends trying to squeeze into a selfie, but there’s just not enough room. Crowding occurs when there’s not enough space in your mouth for all your teeth to fit normally, leading to some teeth overlapping or twisting to find their spot.
An underbite is like a drawer that’s sticking out too far from a cabinet. Normally, the drawer should close evenly, flush with the rest of the cabinet. But with an underbite, it’s as if the drawer is left sticking out, extending beyond where it should be. In the same way, an underbite happens when the lower teeth extend out past the upper teeth. This can affect chewing and speaking, and might make your smile look a bit fierce.
A crossbite is when some of your upper teeth sit inside your lower teeth when you bite down, like a puzzle piece that doesn’t quite fit. This can happen on one or both sides of your mouth and might lead to uneven wear on your teeth and even jaw problems.
Spacing is the opposite of crowding—think of it as a “socially distanced” smile. If you have gaps between your teeth, like little windows in your smile, it’s called spacing. Closing these gaps ensures your teeth align perfectly, creating a seamless, beautiful smile.

Narrow smile
Here, the back teeth are in shadow because they are positioned in a narrow upper jaw. This can make the entire smile appear narrow and give it a pointed look at the front.
Black triangle and stained filling
Where the teeth do not fit closely together you can see a small gap between the front teeth, this area can also be harder to clean and more prone to staining.
Why choose Hampshire Dentists over other practices in the Southampton area?
“I have recently had Invisalign treatment to straighten my smile and am delighted with my results. I can’t recommend Hampshire Dentists enough. Even my children look forward to visiting the dentist!”
Not everyone has the same problem with their teeth, which means not every solution will work for you. We have a range of treatment options available and will help you decide which system is best for you.
- Invisalign: ideal for adults and teens who want a nearly invisible treatment. These clear, removable aligners let you straighten your teeth without anyone noticing.
- Metal Fixed Braces: the tried-and-true choice for many orthodontic issues. Modern advancements have made them more comfortable and less noticeable, while still being highly effective.
- Clear Fixed Braces: these braces work like traditional metal ones but use clear or tooth-coloured brackets, making them a more subtle option for those who want their treatment to be less conspicuous.
No matter if you’re an adult, teen, or child, we have the perfect solution to fit your lifestyle and orthodontic needs.
Imagine needing a master chef to prepare a gourmet meal. While a general cook might be able to whip up a decent dish, a master chef brings experience, expertise, and a refined touch to create a culinary masterpiece. The same principle applies to orthodontic care. Our Specialist Orthodontist Joanna has advanced training and experience, offering a wider range of options and techniques that a general dentist might not provide. This ensures you receive the best possible care and results.
When you choose braces with us, it’s like opting for an all-inclusive vacation package where every detail is taken care of for you. We provide comprehensive care that covers all appointments, materials and any additional measures to ensure stubborn teeth move into their planned position. Rest assured that however straight forward or complicated achieving your new smile is, we’ll make the process run as smoothly as possible for you.
We will see you regularly throughout treatment to make sure everything is going to plan. We’re with you every step of the way, so don’t be afraid to phone, email or pop into the practice if you ever have any questions or concerns.
Maintaining your new smile is crucial, and at Hampshire Dentists, we ensure you have the tools and support to do so. We provide both removable and fixed retainers to keep your teeth in place. Additionally, we offer 12 months of continued support after your treatment ends, making sure your smile stays as perfect as the day your braces come off.
Throughout our braces treatment, we use cutting-edge technology to make your experience accurate and comfortable. Our digital intra oral scanner captures detailed images of your teeth with ease. This allows us to predict precise tooth movements in 3D, crafting a personalised plan just for you. After treatment, a final scan records your new smile for life, this not only helps us detect any potential relapse but also ensures your smile remains future-proofed against any unforeseen changes.
